Insula Communis part 1

Open-Island

Let´s prototype a floating autarkic habitat. Let´s build an „Insula Communis“, an Open-Island! On a flooded opencast brown coal mine in the remote center of Germany. Together with 50 interdisciplinary Makers, together with refugees and other village neighbors… It´s summer 2016, at Ferropolis, an open-air industrial museum and festival ground. It is a Social Sculpture and experiential space, a makers paradise and … what a trip. What an experience and joy! What an adventure – mostly, when the festival-folks from splash! and MELT! flooded the stages…

Of course we were prepared. Had brought a container of stuff and some parts from our last years „Open-Island Berlin„. We had a rough plan what to build, the organic farm „Brückmühle“ as our headquarter and the international art-space „Ampelhaus“ as our showroom. Lots of ideas anyway but limited time…

Open-Island

The day after… …the splash Festival in Ferropolis/Central Germany, 2016.

We collected all the useful trash from only a little part of the campgrounds and were well equipped for the next stage of the floating island. It was about transforming the collected tents and stuff into a floating, illuminated campsite around the Insula-Communis.

We also needed some floating gardens on our island. In Mai, we already had started an Urban Garden project with the neighbouring refugees, so we only had to replace the plants onto some garden-floats…

Every Maker-Camp is lots of work with crazy and interesting people having so much fun in creating stuff together. Deep learnings and relations, intensive situations included and lots of joy, fun and love…

DesignSprint: Open-Island, Hamburg

Kollaborativer Inselbau an der Elbe. An nur drei Tagen entsteht mit Schüler/innen aus Süd-Afrika und Hamburg ein schwimmender Garten in Form eines grünen Fußabdrucks.

Im Rahmen des Klimakunst-Bildungsprogramms des Bildungs Cent e.V. baute ich bereits an mehr als 10 Schulen mit Kindern und Jugendlichen Mini-Inseln aus Apfelsinenkisten, Plastikflaschen und allerlei Materialien. Zur Hamburger Bildungswoche „Wetter, Wasser, Waterkant“ nahm ich dieses Mal jedoch eine komplette Bauskizze und entsprechendes Recyclingmaterial mit. Diese Insel sollte ein Gemeinschaftswerk werden.

In der Halle der Flüchtlingshilfsorganisation „Hanseatic Help“ wurde am ersten Tag der Rohbau des ungewöhnlichen Schwimmkörpers gebaut.

In Hamburg-Rahlstedt wurde die Fuß-Insel am zweiten Tag stabilisiert und weitergebaut und im begleitenden Modellbauworkshop mit Saskia-Lily Thomas aus Berlin entstanden einige fantastische Entwürfe für spätere Projekte.

Ihren Bestimmungsort sollte die Insel schließlich im Zukunftspark Nieklitz, einem vielseitigen Makerkollektiv im nahen Mecklenburg finden. Nach abenteuerlichem Transport über Schleichwege wurde die Schwimminsel begeistert empfangen. Allein die Styropor-Schwimmkörper fanden keine ungeteilte Freude in dem Naturparadies und wurden nach kurzer Diskussion ersetzt.

Bepflanzt, motorisiert, dekoriert und getauft schwimmt sie nun zur dauerhaften Nutzung, Pflege, cokreativen Erweiterung und zur Freude der Bewohner/innen auf dem Badesee der interdisziplinären Lebens- und Forschungsgemeinschaft. Als Symbol für den positiven ökologischen Fußabdruck, der aus Behutsamkeit, Wissen und Kooperation erwächst.
